Sixteen years later an almost identical rifle (sans the expensive-to-manufacture octagon barrel and crescent buttplate) was introduced as the Model 1906. The Model 1890 was a John Browning design and the first successful repeating rimfire rifle. but in the hands of young boys and men who loved to shoot and hunt small game. This tubular-magazine rimfire was wildly popular not only in the plethora of shooting galleries that were across the U.S. Our Assessment: Ever since 1890, when Winchester brought out a slide-action rifle with that year’s model number, the Model 1890 pretty much ruled the roost for rimfire repeaters, also known as gallery guns in a specific configuration. The action is “gritty” and needs a better cleaning. Mechanics: The action functions correctly. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good – Fine condition. Aside from this, there is a lot of finish remaining and this is a very attractive rifle. Some finish is beginning to flake off of the action slide arm and the right rear radius of the frame is thinning and turning brown. The balance of the finish shows handling wear and surface scratching from imperfect storage. Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. The stocks rate in about Fine overall condition.īore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is shallow. The buttplate shows only light handling marks and discoloration and rates in about fine condition. The LOP measures 13 ¼” from the front of the trigger to the back of the plastic Winchester buttplate. The wood is quite attractive, with much original finish. The buttstock has marks and dings, especially at the toe/belly. The ribbed forend shows light handling marks and faint compression marks. Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are smooth walnut. Sights / Optics: The front sight is a steel blade dovetailed into the barrel and the rear sight is a leaf and screw-elevator “U” notch sight screwed to the barrel.
